Cry the Beloved Country: Moving redo of the 1951 film based on Alan Paton’s rejoiced novel, in reference to a backwoods pastor (Jones) who, in 1946, makes his first ever trip to the city of Johannesburg in search of his errant child. At the same time prosperous landowner Harris voyages there to claim the body of his child, who has just been killed. We see phenomenal work by Jones, Harris, and a largely foreign cast. Not as understated as the first making, however powerful in its own way. Cast includes Richard Harris, James Earl Jones, Charles S. Dutton, and Vusi Kunene. (120 minutes, 1995)

Rock My World: This is a pretty good comedy set in England (however shot and funded in Canada) that went directly to video in the U.S. although is far more involving than its theatrical destiny could show. We see an aristocratic British couple lease their mansion to a rock band and end up posing as the butler and chef while the misfit team ultimately shows up. Observing the interplay create between these extremely variant generations and lifestyles is fun and the music is surprisingly catchy. Cast includes Peter O’Toole, Joan Plowright, Alicia Silverstone, Jairnz Woolvett, Keram Malicki-Sanchez, Christopher Bolton, and Lochlyn Munro. (106 minutes, 2002)

Stand and Deliver: Olmos gives a powerful performance in this momentous drama as a hard, requesting professor who empowers his East L.A. barrio scholars to pass an Advanced Placement Calculus Quiz. That’s only the beginning of this tale that is based on a true story. Cast includes Edward James Olmos, Lou Diamond Phillips, Andy Garcia, Can Gotay, and Ingrid Oliu. (105 minutes, 1987)

Mark of the Vampire: This film is an admirable, fascinating story of vampires terrorizing European village. The film is beautifully finished, with a marvelous ending. Redo of Browning’s quiet London after Middle of the night. Cast includes Lionel Barrymore, Elizabeth Allan, Bela Lugosi, Lionel Atwill, Jean Hersholt, and Donald Meek. (61 minutes, 1935)

Pavilion of Women: A slowly developing myth set in 1938 China in reference to freedom vs. feudalism. A loyal woman falls for an American minister when her child longs for his dad’s new concubine. Shot on location in China. Cast includes Luo Yan, Willem Dafoe, Shek Sau, John Cho, Yi Ding, Koh Chieng Mun, and Anita Loo. (119 minutes, 2001)

Bourder Incident: Well put together tale of the U.S. boarder patrol trying to stem the tide of the smuggling of immigrants across Texas-Mexico boundary. Cast includes Ricardo Montalban, George Murphy, Howard da Silva, and Charles McGraw. (92 minutes, 1949)

They Won’t Forget: Thrilling drama starts while pretty high school scholar is killed in Southern town. A gentleman is arrested, and a well known Northern attorney takes the case, however everyone appears more fascinated with capitalizing on personal desires than in due process. No punches are held in this still-commanding film. Lana Turner plays the unlucky gal, in her first big role. Cast includes Claude Pours, Gloria Dickson, Otto Kruger, Allyn Joslyn, Elisha Chef, Jr., and Edward Norris. (95 minutes, 1937)
