Sales: From Secret to Sensational (Part 2 of 3)
Written by Karen Moehr on June 3rd, 2009Direct sales is sales. It’s not any more confusing than that. If you accept an opportunity to work in direct sales, then you are now in a sales position. You can call yourself “rep” or “consultant” or any other snazzy title, but if your income lies in your ability to make sales and commissions or percentages of the profit of your sales, you’re a salesperson!
Sales can often be made quite attractive once a rep starts making good money doing it. Then it’s a title that becomes a little more appealing. A home sales party with high sales can illicit a smile quite quickly.
“I’m in direct sales and I love it!” Once you get a good system, bring in leads and sales consistently and start seeing the power in this career, it can be a wonderful feeling.
Then why do many reps fail in this business? If they just have to chalk up a few sales, what’s the hitch? Of course most of us can garner a few sales to get the ball rolling, but once the bloom is off ther proverbial rose, how does one stay motivated and able to keep those sales rolling in? At first, it can be as easy as telling all your friends about your new endeavor. You can surely get some sales from tried and true friends who also share an interest in your products. You can even book more appointments for future sales opportunities.
This is where fear strikes. If you’re afraid to ask for the sale or to ask for referrals, you’ll probably head home with a huge question mark looming over your head: How will you make this business work? The fear takes over and this is what leads to dropping out and shelving the idea.
Find some successful direct sellers. Read about them, find out how they made it work. You’ll notice some traits you share with them. Some you’ll find you’re much like while others will do things differently from how you see it.
Finding your system that works takes trial and error and hours of frustration and disappointment. But when you do find the “magic” that works for you, those hours are forgotten and the glow of possibilities takes over!
