All of us are issued with our own social security number and the agency has made sure that no two individuals were issued the same number. We use our ssn differently everyday, in fact, its uses has increased greatly. Because of this, many issues about ssn security has grown. Is it really complicated when somebody else knows about our number?

Of course it does. Many unscrupulous individuals are taking advantage of the fact that these numbers have many different uses and they are just looking around for opportunities to get a hold of our ssn so we have to make sure that we are always on the look out.

Keep in mind that agencies have to show us the Privacy Disclosure notice, which is a law mandated by the government that states that no agency has the right to ask for our social security number, before they can actually get it from us. We are under no obligation to disclose our number in any way. But if we go through other transactions like bank loans and others, it will now become our judgment whether to go through the whole process or not. Remember, these private organizations are not bound by the disclosure act so giving it a thorough thinking is essential

Many of us have experienced receiving telemarketing calls, right? Oftentimes, these telemarketing calls are for timeshares for sale, utilities subscription and the most common of all is the telecommunications subscription, specifically post paid plans for mobile phones. The common flow will be you will hear a sales pitch and then the telemarketer will ask you to sign up with him through the phone and most likely, they ask for your ssn as your form of valid identification. Again, remember that in such cases, it becomes your call whether you disclose it or not. But before anything else, you have to make sure that you are dealing with a legit company and if you decide to disclose your personal information, make sure that they have a really secure database to make sure other unauthorized individuals wont have access to it.
