Affiliate Marketing: Learning The Basics Before You Get Started
Written by Johnson Ancheta on August 11th, 2009You can become an affiliate of thousands of companies that do business over the internet; this is called affiliate marketing. You don’t need your own products, because you promote the company’s products or services, by advertising on the internet. When a visitor follows your own special link that the company gives you, to the main website and buys a product, you get paid a commission.
This is a simple and inexpensive way to get started in internet marketing; not only do you not need to create a product, but you don’t have any shipping, returns or complaints to deal with either. All you need to do is promote the product and wait for the commission checks to arrive.
There is a wide variance in the percentage commission paid by different companies and for different products. Look for those that offer higher returns; unfortunately, these may also have thousands of other affiliate marketers already promoting them. Popular products may have loads of competition, which will naturally limit your ability to make a good income.
With most companies you don’t even need your own website; they provide a website for you. However, with many companies, this site is a single sales page with a link to the parent website and order form. While this is an easy way to get started in affiliate marketing, remember that there may be thousands of the identical “websites” being advertised as well as yours.
Your own website allows you to have more control over what your visitors see and lets you promote more than a single product. This spreads your advertising costs over a broader base, particularly if you choose related products or services to promote on your site. You have the freedom to promote each product in more unique ways.
You can easily and cheaply create a website; there are numerous low-cost website building templates and programs on the internet. The next job is to choose a domain name and find a web host to get your website out in cyber space. There are numerous inexpensive web hosting packages available, and while these may not offer a lot of fancy extras, they are perfect to get you started.
When deciding on the products to promote, choose a small section of a popular area, called a niche. There is likely to be less competition in a small niche than in a large, general one. For example, ‘dog training’ might be a popular topic for pet owners who are wanting some fresh information about how to control their dog. There may be many websites and affiliate marketers, and therefore, lots of competition, in that niche. But if you focused on a small part of that niche, it is a narrower field and possibly less competition; for example, ‘training your small dog.’
All that is needed now, in your affiliate marketing business, is to advertise your products to attract visitors (called traffic) to your website. There are numerous traffic methods and loads of information on how and where to find them. You will need to track the results from each traffic source and product to make sure you have the most profitable business possible.
