The Well Communicated Cover Letters Will Get You The Right Career
Let the cover letters you send to potential employers work in your favor. You will show with your letter that you have basic communication skills needed for the job. Check your letter for spelling and errors in grammar. Show your letter to a person with basic grammar skills for correction if you are lacking in this area.
At the top left hand side of your cover letter include your name, address, telephone number, and email address. Then write the date below this information. Next write the name of the person you are sending your cover letter to, his or her business title, and his or her address. Your cover letter should be no longer than one page. The cover letter introduces your resume which you include in your job application pack.
Your letter is at the beginning of your application package which is made up of your resume and application if you have included one. The letter informs the reader what job you are applying for. Be specific in your letter. If you simply want an internship make that clear. If you want a career with the company make that clear in your cover letter.
Realize that the hiring manager receives many resumes and cover letters daily. He or she will not try to guess what the purpose of your letter is. Tell exactly what you want from the hiring manager. You do not need to be demanding but politely be direct. If you heard about the job from someone in the company list his or her name. Get that person’s permission to do so however. If someone recommends you for the position say this; again with his or her approval.
Your resume, not your cover letter, is the place to list your job history and education. But if you have specific qualifications the job requires mention this in your letter. Highlight your skills and characteristics with the job needs in your cover letter. If the job calls for a person who is detailed oriented and you have those skills mention this in your cover letter. Be brief but if you can give an example of your attention to detail mention this in your letter.
If the company requests that you include with your resume extra items like writing samples you can mention in your letter you have followed those instructions. Simply say something like, you will find my writing sample included in my application package.
Do your homework about the company you are applying to. Include in your cover letter unique information about the company. Doing this shows the hiring manager you are not sending out the same cover letters to other hiring managers. And ask for an interview at the end of your letter.
Your hiring manager is reading many resumes a day. The ones that will stick out are those that ask for his or her time. The whole idea behind a cover letter and resume is to get your foot in the door. You need to meet with them personally so they can learn more about you and you certainly want to know more about the company before working for them. Let your cover letters be your first step to your next job.
