Printers have made great strides since their release to the general consumer public in the mid 80s. From dot matrix printers that managed about a page in three minutes, to recent high powered laser printers that work at almost the speed light, wireless printers are thought by many to be the best invention of all.

One of the drawbacks of the regular printers was the wiring necessary between the printer and computer. Whether you had a desktop PC or a laptop, you needed wires and cables to be able to print. The old fashioned serial port cabling was bulky and cumbersome, and the newer USB cabling could still get all tangled up but was certainly less cumbersome to deal with.

Anyone who used a laptop found that printing was a real pain in the neck. The laptop itself was fine, especially if it had a decent battery life. But when it came time to print something, the user would need to head back to the printer, connect the wires and cables, and then print.

Wireless phones finally led to wireless everything, including printers. Wireless security systems even allow home owners to print reports anywhere, or send alerts to mobile devices. Smart phones can handle all types of wireless transmissions and printing is now one more function that business people find a big boon to their productivity. Multiple printers can be installed on these devices, and users can print anywhere they have permissions to do it ‘ home, office, and even airport executive lounges.

These printers are now easier to set up than even a year ago. No longer do you need to run all sorts of software on your computer to teach it to recognize the printer. New computers have multifunction card readers that specifically look for your wireless printer and all you need to do is enter your key code or password for your wireless network in order to use it.

Their prices have been drastically reduced, as happens with all new technology. The original wireless printers were a few hundred dollars and they were more difficult to set up on a wireless network. The newer ones are about $129 and usually come as an ‘all in one’ unit which means you don’t only get a wireless printer, you get a fax machine, copier that can handle color and black and white, and a scanner.

No more need to run into the house, down a hall, up the stairs, just to hook up to the printer. Kids can do their homework from anywhere, dad and mom can catch up with paperwork from the office, and even grandma way upstairs can print her recipes without moving.
